Keywords: difficulty level, discrimination index, English summative test
SMAN 1 Dukun is implementing new regulations where the final semester assessment in the odd semester is made by the English teacher. However, the facts show that the English teacher does not conduct item analysis to check the difficulty level and discrimination index of the English summative test that the teacher has made. Therefore, the quality of the test item is never known, whether it is good or not.
This study aimed to identify the difficulty level and discrimination index on English summative tests for E-phase graders at SMAN 1 Dukun. Thirty-six pupils served as the study samples. The study used a descriptive quantitative method. The English summative test was used as a data resource in this study. The data was analyzed by using Microsoft Excel software. The writer used the formula and classifications from Sundayana (2020).
The calculation output was reviewed on difficulty level analysis, showing that items ten and eleven are identified as easy items (12%). Then, items two, five, eight, fourteen, sixteen, twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-six, twenty-seven, thirty- one, thirty-nine, and forty were identified as moderate items (70%). On the other hand, item numbers one, nineteen, and thirty-two were identified as difficult items (18%). Regarding the discrimination index, items ten, eleven, fourteen, nineteen, thirty-two, and thirty-nine recognize that the item has a moderate discrimination index (35%). In the good discrimination index category are item numbers one, two, eight, sixteen, twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-seven, and forty (47%). The very good categories of the discrimination index are item numbers five, twenty-six, and thirty-one (18%).
In reliance on the data results, the writer can conclude that the proportion of difficulty index level in English Summative for E-phase graders at SMAN 1 Dukun academic year 2022/2023 did not meet the balance proportion between the easy, moderate, and difficult categories. Based on the findings of the discrimination index, the writer concludes that the item with a good discrimination index stood out the most following data analysis. This is a suggestion for the English teachers and test makers to pay more attention to applying a balanced proportion of difficulty items in constructing the test and pay more attention to the notion that the ability among students is different from others. Moreover, the test item must be able to provide test results that reflect the differences in ability among the students. Further researchers should be able to conduct research on testing and assessment in English language teaching in a broader scope
