Essay writing usually become one of the courses that students need to take. The students are guided to write all types of essay writings with good quality. There are some elements that need to be applied by the students to create attractive and understandable essay. To create good quality essay, the students must use cohesion and coherence correctly. If cohesion and coherence are ignored, the result of the writing might be difficult to understand. The objectives of the research are: (1) to analyze what kind of coherence devices that dominantly used by the students in their essay writing; (2) to analyze what kind of cohesion devices that dominantly used by the students in their essay writing. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research was essay writing assignment fifth semester students at English Department of Universitas Tidar. The data was collected through a documentation analysis. A qualitative approach was used to analyze the data. The coherence theory of Wyrick (2006) was used to analyze the coherence devices. Then, Haliday and Hasan (1976) theory about cohesion was used to analyze the cohesion devices. The first result of this study showed that the primary type of coherent devices used by the students in their essay writing was transition word, which amounts to 47%. It was divided into five categories, 26% from contrast, 16% from sequence, 2% from giving example, 2% from result, and 1% from comparison. The second result about cohesion devices showed that the kind of cohesive devices that was mostly used by the students in their essay writing was conjunction which was part of lexical cohesion. The second of this study showed that the primary type of cohesion devices used by the students in their essay writing was lexical cohesion, which amounts to 54%. It was divided into four categories, 47% from conjunction, 4% from reiteration, and 2% from collocation, and 1% from elipsis. The writer hopes that the teachers and the students can use this finding as a reference to pay attention on their coherence and cohesion so that their writing products being a good quality writing.
