SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING EXPANDING PANEL STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH READING SKILL ON EXPLANATION TEXT AT SMAN 1 TEMANGGUNG

Keywords: Effective, Learning, Reading Skill Reading is one of the English language skills that must be mastered by students. By reading, students get many benefits, such as information or knowledge. However, there are many problems that cause students to lack reading skills. The use of learning strategies such as Expanding Panel strategy and Mind Map strategy is expected to improve reading skills on explanation text. The objective of the study is to find out how effective the use of Expanding Panel strategy on students’ reading skill of explanation text and to find out if there is any difference in the students’ reading skill of explanation text who were taught using Expanding Panel strategy and Mind Map. This study is a true experimental research design with the cluster random sampling technique. The sample consisted of 72 students, divided into two classes of 11th graders from XI MIPA 3 (the experimental group, consisting 36 students) and XI MIPA 5 (the control group, consisting 36 students). The experimental group was taught with Expanding Panel strategy and the control group was taught with Mind Map strategy. The data were analyzed using t-test to know whether the strategy used was effective or not. The result of the study showed that the use of Expanding Panel strategy effective on students’ reading skill of explanation text, it can be seen from the significance value of paired sample t-test is 0.002 and it is lower than 0.05, so the t-count is significant, which means that the pre-test and post-test scores significantly different. Also there is a difference between the use of Expanding Panel strategy and Mind Map on students’ reading skill of explanation text. It can be seen from the increase in pre-test and post-test scores in the experimental class was 15.83 points, while the increase in scores in the control class was 9.82 points. Additionally, the result of the significance value of the independent t-test is 0.003 and it is lower than 0.05, so the t-count is significant, which means that the two groups’ scores significantly different.
