Keywords: conversation analysis, overlapping speech, overlap types, overlap functions Speaking has a vital role in everyday life. People have conversations to communicate with each other. At least two people carry out a good conversation. The interview is an example of the dialogue carried out by two people between the interviewer and the interviewee. Knowing the transition of speaking opportunities between the interviewee and the interviewer is essential in conversational interactions. Heldner and Edlund (2010) argue three possible ways of speaking transition opportunities. There may be silence, there may be overlap, or there may be silence or overlap. However, this study focused on overlap. This study was conducted to answer two research objectives. This study analyzed the types of overlapping speech and the functions of overlapping speech in the video entitled “An Exclusive Interview with Dina Asher-Smith.” The type of this study is conversation analysis. The writer used notes as the research instrument to collect the primary data by transcribing the conversation in the video. Then, the writer analyzed the utterances containing overlapping speech using the theory from Schegloff (2000) to analyze the types of overlap; and used the theory from Jorfi & Dowlatabadi (2016) in analyzing the functions of overlap. This study used three steps in analyzing the data (Miles et al., 2014); data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. This study found that 35 utterances contain overlapping speech. Two types of overlapping speech occurred in the video: competitive overlap (19 data) and non-competitive overlap (16 data). Furthermore, this study found that there are four functions of overlap that occurred in the video; those are; floor-taking (16 data), confirming (16 data), objecting (2 data), and continuing (1 datum).
