Writing involves cognitive processes, so it has been considered a more challenging language ability to master. Many students frequently need help writing, for instance in generating ideas and developing writing into a coherent paragraph. Additionally, it is known that many teachers still need to implement appropriate learning strategies to help students write. One of the teaching strategies and media that teachers can use in writing practice is the SHOWeD analysis strategy and photovoice as a teaching medium. The objective of this study is to investigate if there is any significant difference in the students' text writing skills who were taught using SHOWeD analysis strategy with photovoice compared to the students who were taught using 3W question strategy by using picture and to find out the effectiveness of SHOWeD analysis strategy with photovoice as a strategy and learning media on student explanation text writing skills. This study applied quantitative research with quasi-experimental design in Nonequivalent Control Group design through pretest and posttest. The participants of this study were 61 eleventh graders at MAN 1 Magelang who were divided into two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. Based on the analyzed data, p-value or sig. (2-tailed) in hypothesis testing using the Mann-Whitney test was 0.00, which was lower than the level of significance determined, 0.05. means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted or the strategy and teaching media implemented significantly differed between the two groups with different treatments. Moreover, the N-gain test was tested to investigate the effectiveness of the strategy implemented. Based on the average, the score obtained in the experimental group is 63.92%, which belonged to the effective enough category, while the control group gains 46.29%, which belonged to the less effective category. In conclusion, the implications of SHOWeD analysis with photovoice on the student ability to write explanation texts in the eleventh graders at MAN 1 Magelang have been proven to be more effective than teaching using 3W strategies.
