ABSTRACT
Cahyaningrum, Nova Citra (2024). Investigating the Assessment Tasks of Listening Skill Learning Material in the English Textbook Entitled ‘Work in Progress’. Undergraduate Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Universitas Tidar. Advisor I Dr. Dwi Winarsih, M.Pd., Advisor II Puri Bakthawar, M.A Keywords: Listening skill, listening assessment task, textbook, content analysis In the EFL classroom, teaching listening skills is still neglected in the educational process (Gilakjani & Ahmadi, 2011). Language teachers have the primary responsibility of preparing their students to effectively engage in communication. Therefore, it is crucial for teachers to select the appropriate textbook that can fulfill students’ needs. In fact, hardly every English textbook has thorough and well-written assessment tasks. The research conducted has two objectives. The objectives of this study are to investigate the types of listening assessment tasks and to describe the purpose of each listening assessment task in the textbook entitled ‘Work in progress’. The type of the research is qualitative research, utilizing content analysis as its research design, given that the data were collected from the textbook. The data were analyzed descriptively using Brown's (2018) theory. For data collection, the writer employed a documentation technique. The data analysis process involved several key steps, including identifying the types of listening assessment tasks based on Brown’s theory, categorizing these tasks, determining the purposes of each listening assessment task based on Sabio’s (2012) theory, and calculating the frequency of each type of listening assessment task found in the textbook. Based on the result of this study, the writer found 21 listening assessment tasks in the textbook ‘Work in Progress’. Out of the 10 types of listening assessment tasks, only 6 are present in the textbook, as follows: intensive listening, which includes recognizing phonological and morphological elements and paraphrase recognition (sentences/dialogue); responsive listening, which involves providing an open-ended response to a question; selective listening, which consists of listening cloze and information transfer; and extensive listening, which involves authentic listening tasks. Each listening assessment task has various purposes depending on its type. Different types of listening assessment tasks are designed to achieve different purposes..
