Keywords: vague language, language stretches, vagueness, students’ argument The presence of VL in students’ debate arguments is notable, particularly among EFL students whose non-native status hinders language proficiency. This study aims to explore 1) the categories of vague language realized in students' arguments and 2) how stretches of vague language are manifested as pragmatic functions in students' arguments within the English Debate and Critical Thinking course. This study draws on Parvaresh's (2018) and Zhang's (2011, 2013) major categories of VL, along with Zhang's (2015) Elastic Language Stretchability Principle, which includes upward, downward, and horizontal stretches. These theories provide a framework for understanding the types and functions of VL in student debates, highlighting how VL used within the context of language learning and communication. The methodology involves discourse analysis research design. The research instrument was using a coding matrix to identify the debate transcript. The analysis of students' arguments from the EDCT course, involving four students from the Opening teams. The analysis of students' arguments from the EDCT course revealed a total of 63 instances of VL, categorized into six of the seven major VL types identified by Parvaresh and Zhang. The most frequent category was the vague possibility indicator, accounting for 33.33% of the instances. This was followed by vague nouns and intensifiers, each comprising 23.8% of the instances, vague estimators at 12.7%, and vague extenders and subjectivisers at 3.2% each. The vague deintensifier category was notably absent.
