SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF REITERATION IN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS

Based on curriculum 2013, English Education Department students are taught to write argumentative essays. In composing argumentative essay, there were problems faced by students, namely the lack of vocabulary. Students usually write words repeatedly and do not try to vary the words. Therefore, the students also need to consider the use of reiteration in writing a text.
This study aims to identify the types and the dominant type of reiteration in argumentative essay of English Education Department students. The study used descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from argumentative essay written by fifth semester students. The writer collected the data through documentation. Then, the writer analyzed data results based on Halliday and Hasan’s (2014) theory.
The result of this study shows 507 reiteration items occurred in 14 argumentative essays that have been analyzed. It presents all of reiteration types exist in the students’ argumentative essay. Repetition becomes the most dominant type of reiteration that occurs 449 times (88,5%) spread to all of argumentative essay. In another part, the result showed that synonym occurs 13 times (2,5%), superordinate occurs 21 times (4,1%), and general word occurs 24 times (4,7%).
The writer suggests teachers are expected to provide explanations about how to vary word choices by applying reiteration theory. Teachers must also provide examples of how to apply reiteration theory to build any lexical items to form a text, especially argumentative essays. The writer also suggests that students are supposed to enrich vocabulary by applying the types of reiteration. While for future researchers, it will be better to research more about the study of reiteration to use this research as a resource.
