SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN TEACHER TALK TO ENCOURAGE EFFECTIVE INTERACTION IN THE EFL CLASSROOM OF SMA NEGERI 2 KOTA MAGELANG

It affects to achievement of learning goals. However, numerous problemsrelated to communication such as the inadequacy of teacher knowledge about theproper communication, especially how to politely behave between teacher andstudents might arise. Politeness strategy on the teacher’s utterance is essential toencourage the effective interaction. This study reveals the use of politeness strategyon teacher’s talk to encourage effective interaction of EFL classroom.The objectives of this study are: (1) to investigate the politeness strategiesused in teacher talk in the EFL classroom of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Magelang; (2) tofind out the implications of the politeness strategies in teacher talk in the EFLclassroom of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Magelang; and (3) to find out how politenessstrategies in teacher talk encourage effective interaction in the EFL classroom ofSMA Negeri 2 Kota Magelang. The theory of politeness and classroom interactionapplied are Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC) by Flanders (1970,cited in Walsh 2011), politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson (1987, cited inThi et al. 2021), and the indicators of effective classroom interaction by Good andGrouws (1977, cited in Thi et al. 2021). This study focuses on the implications ofpoliteness strategies for encouraging effective interaction in EFL classrooms.The data finding of this study are present and analyze by implementingqualitative method to explore the research phenomenon in real-world settings. Thesubject of this study is an English teacher in SMA Negeri 2 Kota Magelang. Thus,the primary data resources are the transcript of teacher’s talk and the audiorecording of the interview conducted with the teacher which collected by thetechnique of documentation and interview. The data analyzed by the process of datacondensation, data display, drawing, and verifying conclusion.The result shows that as much as 186 data of politeness strategy aredocumented in the two classrooms of EFL classroom interaction of SMA Negeri 2Kota Magelang. All of the kinds of politeness are recognized with the bald on recordstrategy as the most common politeness to occurs with 47.9% of the occurrences.The writer also found that each kind of politeness has implications which linked tothe indicators of effective classroom interaction. It shows a significant connectionbetween politeness strategies in teacher talk and the efficient encouragement ofencouraging an effective EFL classroom interaction.The pedagogical implication of this study is that the teacher can apply thepoliteness strategy in accordance with the classroom needs because it is essential tomaintain a good relationship in the learning process. Thus, the writer expected thenext researcher to obtain more information about the implications of politenessstrategies in various settings of English education, which will be used as a referencewhen conducting relevant research.
