Keywords: Descriptive Reading Text, English Textbook, Lexical Cohesion, Tenth Grades This research delves into the investigation of lexical cohesion within descriptive reading texts featured in an English textbook tailored for tenth-grade students. The study offers valuable insights into the efficacy of cohesive devices within the realm of educational materials, thereby contributing to the enhancement of curriculum development and instructional practices for tenth-grade students. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of lexical cohesion used in the reading text of the tenth graders English textbook and to find out the dominant type of lexical cohesion used in the reading text of the tenth graders English textbook. This research used qualitative method. To gain the data, the writer used documentation. The data were collected from the Kemendikud catalouge book taken from the official website of Pusat Kurikulum dan perbukuan Balitbang Kemendikbud. The data were analyzed based on theory of lexical cohession by Halliday and Hassan (1997). The analysis centers on the presence and impact of lexical cohesion, encompassing five distinct categories—Repetition, Synonym or Near-Synonym, General Word, Superordinate, and Collocation. Notably, all five types of lexical cohesion were identified in each reading text, with a total of 158 occurrences throughout the tenth-grade English textbook. Of these occurrences, Repetition emerged as the most prevalent form, accounting for 48 instances, followed by Superordinate (38), Collocation (36), Synonym or Near-Synonym (27), and General Word (10). Drawing from the research findings, specific recommendations are provided to enhance reading comprehension and fluency through targeted lexical cohesive devices. Ultimately, the research aims to bolster students' overall language proficiency, enabling them to effectively comprehend and engage with descriptive reading texts at the tenth-grade level. This study holds significance for educators and curriculum developers, offering practical insights into optimizing educational materials and fostering better language learning experiences for students.
