SKRIPSI DERIVATIONAL SUFFIXES IN TEXTS IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK FOR THE 11th GRADE ENTITLED “MODUL PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS” USED BY MAN 1 KABUPATEN MAGELANG

Keywords : Texts, Derivational Suffixes, Textbooks Based on the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 25 regulation of 2022, textbooks were books prepared for learning based on national education standards and the applicable curriculum. In the teaching and learning process, apart from using textbooks from the Ministry of Education, English teachers at MAN 1 Kabupaten Magelang developed and replicated textbooks as books to support learning materials entitled "Modul Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris" for grades ten, eleven, and twelve. These textbooks contain various types of text, and several suffixed words are in the reading text, making it difficult for students to understand the text. The students still have difficulty understanding the meaning of complex or unfamiliar words because of low vocabulary and lack of knowledge of suffixes, especially derivational suffixes that can change the meaning and parts of speech. This study aims to identify derivational suffixes' types, functions, and meanings in texts in English textbook.The study analyzes the derivational suffixes in texts in textbook using a qualitative approach and content analysis method. The data was from texts based on genres that learned in senior high school expecially texts in English textbook for the 11th grade entitled 'Modul Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris' used by MAN 1 Kabupaten Magelang. The writer collected the data through documentation within the textbooks and got nineteen texts based on genres, there were four texts of invitation text, six texts of analytical exposition text, one text of report text, and the last was eight texts of explanation text that to be analyzed and identified in this study. The writer analyzed data results based on Plag's theory (2003) combined with Katamba's theory (1993). And the function of derivational suffixes based on Lieber’s theory (2009). Based on the result of this study, the total number of derivational affixes in the English text in students’ textbooks was 104; verbal suffixes, which appeared 1 time; nominal suffixes, which appeared 47 times; adverbial suffixes, which appeared 26 times; and adjectival suffixes, which appeared 30 times. The second was the function of derivational suffixes that consisted of category-changing lexeme formation, which occurred 18 times, meaning-changing lexeme formation, which occurred 8 times, and both categories and meaning-changing lexeme formation, which occurred 78 times. Then, for the meanings of derivational suffixes 103 items of data were found to have meaning and were analyzed based on the theory of Plag (2003) and Katamba (1993). Only one word that has meaning is not based on the theory used in this study.
