The low ability of students to read report text was the starting point for this research. This happened due to various factors. There are several ways to improve the students' reading skills, with the teacher's role in delivering material to the students as one of the essential aspects of the learning strategy. Thus, a study was required to determine the effectiveness of a team-based flipped learning strategy that can improve students’ reading skills in the reports.
The aims of this study were: a) to know the significant difference of students’ reading skill between those who are taught by team-based flipped learning and those who are taught by small group discussion; b) to know the effectiveness of team-based flipped learning in improving tenth-grade students’ reading skills.
The research method used was a Quasi-experimental design. The population of this study were the tenth graders of SMK N 2 Magelang in the school year 2023/2024. The total number of students is 396, with 36 students in each class. The sample was class X AKL A and X AKL B. The total number of students is 72. The researcher used tests to collect data. The researcher used an independent sample t-test and N-Gain to analyze the data.
The results of this study were as follows: 1) Based on the independent sample, t-test results show a significant difference between the team-based flipped learning strategy and small group discussion strategy. The result showed that the significance (2-tailed) was 0.021, which is lower than 0.05 (0.021 < 0.05). It means there was a significant difference in students’ reading skills between those taught by team-based flipped learning and those taught by small group discussion. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) was also accepted. 2) The effectiveness of using the team-based flipped learning strategy was calculated using N-Gain. The results show that the presentation value of N gain in the experimental class was 62.849, which is quite effective. Additionally, the researcher invites future researcher to explore research on teaching strategy, precisely the team-based flipped learning strategy, to expand available references in the field. The researcher suggests that teachers may use team-based flipped learning as a learning strategy because of the many advantages that can be considered. In addition, other researcher can develop this study with different aspects or learning materials and a wider scope in the future.
