Reading is a crucial skill that students must acquire when studying English. While the textbook comprises multiple texts, students might need help to comprehend narrative texts that employ figurative language with non-literal meanings. Though there are various types of figurative language, students are generally acquainted with only a few of them. Therefore, the writer conducted a study to overcome the problem by doing a semantic analysis of figurative language in narrative text for reading skills on the Merdeka curriculum textbook for the eleventh graders.
The study has three objectives: the first is to analyse the types of figurative language found, the second is to find out the dominant figurative language types, and the third is to find out the functions of figurative language types used in the reading skill narrative text of the Merdeka curriculum English textbook.
This study used descriptive qualitative research to present and analyse the data findings. The subject of this study is an English textbook for the eleventh graders using the Merdeka curriculum entitled "Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Lanjut." The instrument of this study is a document, a guideline adapted from "Perrine's Literature: Structure, Sounds & Sense," published in 2018. There were four steps to collecting the data: reading, identification, classification, and simplification. The units of analysis were five selected narrative texts to improve students' reading skills. The writer used data analysis techniques: condensation, display, and drawing and verifying conclusions.
The analysis of the five chosen narrative texts showed that they contain 21 figurative languages, which can be divided into eight types. The most frequently used figurative language is a symbol, which appears eight times, followed by personification, which appears five times. Synecdoche and overstatement appear twice each in the selected narrative texts. Comparatively, the least frequently used figurative languages in the selected narrative texts are simile, apostrophe, irony, and metonymy, which only appear once each in the selected narrative texts. There are three functions of figurative language: it allows the reader to enjoy imaginative pleasure and brings additional imagery into the text, adds emotional intensity to the literary text, and says much in a brief compass. This study aims to improve students' reading and critical thinking skills by teaching them to understand figurative language in narratives, offering insights for educators and serving as a model for similar studies.
