Code-switching is one of the strategies commonly used by English teachers in the teaching and learning process. Likewise, in grade XII IPA 2 of MAN Kota Magelang, teachers also use code-switching when teaching English classes. English teacher uses two languages in grade XII IPA 2, namely English and Indonesian. This is due to students' lack of vocabulary and knowledge in English, which causes students to find it difficult to understand the material if the teacher teaches in full English. Apart from that, the mindset that English is difficult makes students' interest in learning English decrease because they always think that English is difficult. Therefore, the writer was interested in researching code-switching used in English teacher talks in the teaching-learning process at grade 12 IPA 2 of MAN Kota Magelang. The purpose of this study is to identify the types, functions and students’ perspectives regarding the use of code-switching used by English teacher in the teaching and learning process. The data in this study were analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods. The subjects of this study were English teacher and students of XII IPA 2 of MAN Kota Magelang in the school year 2023/2024. Observation, audiovisual material, interviews, and questionnaires are the techniques used by the writer to collect data in this study. The writer uses Poplack's theory to analyze types of code-switching, Mattson and Burenhutt's theory to analyze the function of code-switching, and Mukhsen's theory to analyze students' perspectives on the use of code-switching used by teachers in teaching. This study discovered 78 code-switchings carried out by English teacher in the teaching and learning process in grade XII IPA 2. There were three types, namely inter-sentential switching with 33 data (42%), intra-sentential switching with 39 data (50% ), and extra-sentential switching with 6 data (8%). Apart from that, there are three functions of code-switching, namely topic switch with 41 data (53%), affective function with 21 data (27%), and repetitive function with 16 data (20%). Furthermore, a positive perspective was obtained from students regarding the use of code switching by English teacher in the teaching and learning process viii because this makes it easier for students to understand the material or instructions given by the teacher. As a result, there were three types and functions of code-switching used by English teacher during the teaching and learning process. The most dominant type of code-switching used by English teacher is Intra-sentential switching, and the most dominant function of code-switching used by the English teacher is the topic switch function. Apart from that, the students have a positive perspective regarding the use of code-switching in English teacher talks during the teaching and learning process because the students feel helped by the code-switching used by teachers in teaching. The code-switching used by English teachers in teaching can make it easier for students to understand the material and instructions given by the teacher.
