Keywords: Descriptive Text, Learning Media, Picture Prompts, Writing Skills Writing is known to be more complex than other English language skills such as listening, speaking, and reading. The complexity of writing makes writing skills challenging for students. In this case, the use of learning media to help students is needed. Among various kinds of learning media that exist is picture prompts. Picture prompts provide visual media and textual guides to let students brainstorm their ideas effectively. Teachers can utilize picture prompts to guide students during the process of writing especially in descriptive text. The objective of this research is to determine the significant difference between students’ writing skills in descriptive text who are taught using picture prompts and those taught using texts. This research also aims to find out how high is the difference between students’ writing skills in descriptive text who are taught using picture prompts and those taught using texts. This research employed quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design. The quasi-experimental specifically applied a nonequivalent group design with pre-test and post-test data collection. By using the purposive sampling technique with a certain consideration, the study involved 60 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 3 Magelang that vary around experimental and control groups. According to the independent sample t-test, there is a significant difference (Sig. = 0.00) between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups, indicating that students taught using picture prompts show significantly better descriptive writing skills than those taught using texts. The results also indicate that using picture prompts resulted in higher descriptive text-writing scores compared to relying solely on texts. The findings demonstrate a significant difference in the experimental group's scores between the pre-test and post-test ballads. The experimental group showed a higher N-gain of 0.2787 compared to the control group's N-gain of 0.1697. While both picture prompts and text proved useful as learning media, the findings suggest that picture prompts are more effective for making significant differences in students’ writing results.
