Writing is an important skill that students must master in learning English. It is the ability to take ideas and information and present them in a good writing format to be read. Based on the researcher's observation at SMP N 9 Magelang, some students had problems in the English learning process, especially in writing. They found it difficult to develop their writing skills due to the lack of feedback given on their writing assignments. One alternative solution to overcome the problem is by providing direct corrective feedback.
Based on the problems faced by some students of SMP N 9 Magelang, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of direct corrective feedback in improving the writing ability of eighth graders at SMP N 9 Magelang. This study used a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-tests for the control group and experimental group. The sample consisted of students from two classes, 27 students from the experimental class and 28 students from the control class selected through the purposive sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 22 through normality test, homogeneity test, independent sample t-test, and N-gain test.
Based on the findings of the total calculation of the study, it could be concluded that the mean score of the experimental class increased by 31.00 points, from 48.30 to 79.30. While the mean score of the control class increased by 17.29 points, from 52.71 to 70.00. Furthermore, the Sig. value of the t-test (0.000) showed that there was a significant difference in students' writing ability after the direct corrective feedback treatment was applied. The N-gain results also showed that the treatment given was effective enough to improve students' writing skills. This can be seen from the statistical score (59.6343) which falls into the moderately effective category.
The study concluded that direct corrective feedback was moderately effective for improving students' writing abilities. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of implementing structured and consistent feedback mechanisms in the classroom to facilitate better learning outcomes. Recommendations for teachers include adopting direct corrective feedback practices to provide clear and immediate guidance to students, thereby improving their writing proficiency.
