SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF KWL STRATEGY TO IMPROVE REPORT TEXT READING SKILL OF TENTH GRADERS

Keywords: Effectiveness, Reading Skill, The K-W-L (Know-Want-Learn) Strategy. Reading skills are a person's ability to understand, interpret and process information contained in written text. This reading ability includes understanding words, phrases, sentences and text as a whole. Students' reading ability which is not yet optimal is the teacher's task to improve it. One way is to apply a reading strategy. K-W-L (Know-Want-Learn) strategy can be an alternative strategy that teachers choose to overcome students' reading problems. This strategy emphasizes that students are able to build their prior knowledge, foster curiosity about the text, and think critically to answer their curiosity. The aim of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension of tenth grade students who are taught using the K-W-L strategy and those who are not taught using this strategy at SMA N 1 Kota Mungkid in academic year 2023/2024. This research used a quasi-experimental type of research and this research was conducted in two classes, namely the experimental class which was taught using the K-W-L strategy and the control class which was not taught using the KW-L strategy. The population was taken from class X students of SMA N 1 Kota Mungkid for the 2023/2024 academic year, totaling 350 students. The sample for this research was 32 students in the experimental class and control class using purposive sampling technique. The data collection gained from test. The data was analyzed by using SPSS V26 program. The research results from N-Gain test value on the classification table 4.13 this value can be stated to have a medium effectiveness value. Thus, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. This means K-W-L strategy is effective in improving report text reading skill of the tenth graders at SMA N 1 Kota Mungkid. Meanwhile, on the research results from Independent Sample T-Test show that the test value is lower than the table value (1.672 < 1.999). It can be concluded that Ha is rejected and Ho is accepted. This means there is no a significant different in the reading skill of student who use the K-W-L (Know-Want-Learn) strategy compared to the summarizing strategy.
