SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING APPROPRIATE ADJECTIVES OF THE TENTH GRADER STUDENTS’ WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

Descriptive TextAccording to the English Textbook in the 2013 Senior High School Curriculum, there are various texts that learners must know in the tenth grade students. One of the texts that needs to be studied is descriptive text. In writing descriptive text creatively, students can add information by using adjectives. Despite the importance of adjectives in descriptive text, many students still need help in using adjectives accurately and appropriately. These difficulties can be caused by the limited vocabulary, difficulty in selecting appropriate adjectives and difficulty with grammatical rules related to the appropriateness and placement of adjectives.This research aims to find out how tenth grade students use appropriate adjectives when describing objects and to find out the type of adjectives that tenth grade students most often use in their descriptive texts. The study was conducted at SMAN 1 Mertoyudan. The subjects and participants of this study were 36 students of the tenth grader. This research used a descriptive qualitative research approach. The writer analized the descriptive texts written by students by using Dykes’ (2007) theory.The result of this study shows that students can use adjectives appropriately, with the appropriateness of accurate description, relevance to the context, clarity and specificity, grammatical correctness and enhancing descriptiveness. The number of adjectives used by students was 254 adjectives. The type of adjective most frequently used by students is a descriptive adjective, with a total of 104 adjectives, and the one most rarely used by students is an interrogative adjective, with a total of 1 adjective. Students should expand their vocabulary by learning new adjectives through dictionaries or language apps and regularly practising writing descriptive texts.
