SKRIPSI ENHANCING THE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH UNDERCOVER GAME IN THE FIFTH GRADERS OF SDN BOROBUDUR 1 MAGELANG

English learning at elementary school focuses on vocabulary acquisition by reusing some vocabularies in different context of learning. Using varied media in teaching vocabulary in elementary school is crucial to prevent the students from feeling boredom in learning vocabulary. In this study, undercover game was used as a media to enhance the students’ English vocabulary mastery in the fifth graders of SDN Borobudur 1 Magelang.This study was aimed to describe how the undercover game be used to enhance students’ English vocabulary mastery in the fifth graders of SDN Borobudur 1 Magelang and to define how the fifth graders of SDN Borobudur 1 Magelang perceive the use of undercover game as a media for enhancing their English vocabulary mastery.The type of the study was an action research. This study was conducted in the 5A Class at SDN Borobudur 1 Magelang in two cycles with three meetings for each cycle. All the 19 students in 5A Class participated as the subject of the study from which the writer gained qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data was drawn from classroom observation in Cycle I and Cycle II with the addition of the data drawn from interview transcript taken after the implementation of Cycle I and Cycle II. Meanwhile, the quantitative data of the study drawn from vocabulary test result taken in Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II described the enhancement of the students’ English vocabulary mastery in the study. The writer enhanced the trustworthiness of the data using triangulation of data collection technique and by having discussion for expert judge.The results of the research showed that the of undercover game in the fifth graders of SDN Borobudur 1 Magelang enhanced students’ English vocabulary mastery. From the results of the vocabulary tests in Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II, there were increases in the students’ average score which results were 63.42, 72.89, and 78.94. There were development in the students’ behaviour significantly seen in the students’ participation in teaching and learning activities. The undercover game also got the students being familiar with the analysis activities in memorizing vocabularies. The students enjoyed learning vocabulary using undercover game and viewed that the use of undercover game enhanced their vocabulary mastery.
