SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES IN NARRATIVE TEXT OF ENGLISH TEXTBOOK FOR TENTH GRADE STUDENTS

Keywords: Prefixes, Suffixes, Narrative Text, Textbook In 2017, Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture began updating Bahasa Inggris textbook for tenth graders. The textbook includes a variety texts to help students improve their reading skill, one of the text is narrative text. However, using Bahasa Inggris textbook is not easy for many students. They have difficulty in using it. They still had low reading skills, and their limited vocabulary and knowledge of affixes, especially prefixes and suffixes, make it difficult for them to understand the meaning of words they are unfamiliar with. This study aims to identify the types and the dominant type, also the functions of prefixes and suffixes in narrative text of the English textbook. The study used descriptive qualitative approach to analyze prefixes and suffixes found in narrative text of the English textbook. The data were analyzed were taken from Bahasa Inggris textbook for tenth grade students. The writer collected the data analysis through documentation and got three narrative text to be analyzed. The writer used Plag’s (2002) theory to analyze the data and results. Based on the result and findings of this study, there were 85 prefixes and suffixes found in the narrative text of the textbook. It consist of 83 suffixes (97,6%) and 2 prefixes (2,4%). Suffixes includes several types, such as noun suffixes which appears 27 times (31,8%), adjective suffixes which appears 36 times (42,3%), verb suffixes which appears 8 times (9,4%), and adverb suffixes which appears 12 times (14,1%). There were also prefixes which appears 2 times (2,4%) and consists of only negative prefixes. Then, the writer found the dominant type of prefixes and suffixes in narrative text of students’ textbook was suffixes. The writer found 83 suffixes or 97,6% of the data. While the dominant type of suffixes was adjective suffixes. The writer found 36 adjective suffixes or 42,3% of the data. Besides that, the writer also found three functions of prefixes and suffixes in narrative texts of students’ textbook, there were changes the meaning of word function(26), changes the part of speech function(13), and changes both of the meaning of word and the part of speech function(46). Changes the meaning of word function have several indications, consist of indicates into negative(2), indicates process or result(9), indicates able to be(1), indicates to make more(1), indicates in a manner(9), and so on. Meanwhile, changes the part of speech function also have several changes. There are verb into noun(12), noun into verb(2), verb into adjectives(21), adjective into adverb(12), and so on. The writer gives suggestion for the English teachers, they must be aware of each type and each function of prefixes and suffixes when use this textbook and apply it in the teaching learning process. For the other researchers, they can use this study as a reference in future. They can discuss about this topic more deeply in the other subject or skill. Then, the writer also give suggestion for the authors of the book, they need keep their attention on how the textbook's range of prefixes and suffixes is both thorough and diverse.
