SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF DEIXIS IN THE ELEVENTH GRADERS’ CONVERSATION TEXTS OF SMA NEGERI 1 MERTOYUDAN

Keywords: conversation text, deixis, pragmatics Language is a communication instrument that play an essential role in communication. The study of meaning provided by the speaker (or writer) and understood by the listener (or reader) is known as pragmatics. Deixis is one of the pragmatic elements that many people should be aware of. Deixis contains a feature that provides detailed information about the sentence or speech. In this study, the writer investigated deixis in students’ conversation texts in the eleventh graders’ in SMA Negeri 1 Mertoyudan. There are two aims in this study they are (1) to identify the types of deixis used in conversation texts made by the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Mertoyudan, and (2) to find the dominant types of deixis used in conversation texts made by the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Mertoyudan. The research design employed in this study was qualitative research. The data were taken from conversation texts written by the eleventh graders at SMA Negeri 1 Mertoyudan as an assignment. In analyzing the data, the writer used Levinson’s (2003) theory. The study revealed that deixis occurred 346 times in conversation texts written by the eleventh graders at SMA Negeri 1 Mertoyudan. Types of Deixis that were found in the students’ conversation texts were Person Deixis appears with 235 data (67.92%); Discourse Deixis with 83 data (23.99%); Spatial Deixis with 12 data (3.47%); Temporal Deixis with 9 data (2.60%); and Social Deixis with 7 data (2.02%). Person Deixis is the dominant deixis in conversation texts written by SMA Negeri 1 Mertoyudan eleventh graders with 235 data (67.92%). The writer hopes that the findings of this study will assist teachers in gaining a better understanding of deixis and its various forms, and will provide students with more knowledge and explanations about deixis as a universal language skill. Besides, the writer also hopes this study can assist students in comprehending the deixis and references and inspire them to enhance their capacity to learn English.
