English Department, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Tidar University of Magelang In the world of education, in Indonesia, English, as the first foreign language, is taught both in Junior and Senior High Schools. It is also included in the curriculum 1994. In the teaching-learning process, language teaching is focused on four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In 1999, the government made a new curriculum as the perfection of the previous one. The content is about the emphasis on language teaching through communicative approach. The curriculum is used for Junior High School including SLTPN 1 Windusari At SLTPN I Windusari, however, teaching English is still intended to master reading skill only, therefore it does not develop the students skill in speaking English. According to the development of teaching technique, English teachers always make an effort to give their students more opportunity to express their ideas, opinions, thoughts and feelings by giving them a stimulus There are many kinds of media used to increase speaking ability as teaching media in teaching-learning process in Junior High School although not every school makes it available. One of the media, which is used, is identity card media (ID Card). ID Card is a visual medium, which has temporary characteristics. ID Card is simple, cheap, and easy to understand. The teacher can also make that medium in order to make the teaching-learning process easier, and more interesting, especially on simple conversation topics. Effectiveness, however, to increase speaking ability for Junior High School students still needs to prove through a research. The purpose of this research is to prove the effectiveness of using identity card media in the teaching of English speaking skill to the first year junior high school students of SLTP Negeri 1 Windusari. By reviewing related theories, the researcher can assume two hypotheses as follows:
1. There are different results in using ID card and using textbooks method) in teaching English speaking skill.(general
2. ID card is effective in making students more creative and active in speaking English
In order to find out whether those hypotheses can be accepted or not, the researcher carried out an experimental research which took 44 first year students of SLTPN | Windusari as samples. They were divided into two groups, A and B. consisting of 22 students each. The first group. A, was ught by using ID cards, whereas the second one was taught by using textbooks Then the results of the two groups were compared
