SKRIPSI PENGARUH PENGUASAAN KATA DEPAN TERHADAP KEMAMPUAN MENULIS DESKRIPSI BERBAHASA INGGRIS SISWA KELAS 3 SLTP KANISIUS SANTO YUSUP MERTOYUDAN KABUPATEN MAGELANG TAHUN PELAJARAN 2003/2004
Writing is one of the four la quag skills that should be mastered by students.
Many factors influence writing skill both internal and external factors. One of them is preposition mastery. Preposition mastery on the English descriptive writing ability gives a good result in teaching writing.
The objectives of this research are to prove that there is a positive influence of preposition mastery on English descriptive writing ability and to find whether or not there is a significant contribution of students' preposition mastery to writing description ability. Accordingly, the researcher puts forward two hypotheses as follows:
1. There is a positive correlation between students' preposition mastery and their descriptive writing ability.
2. Preposition mastery has a significant contribution to their English descriptive writing ability.
To prove the hypotheses above, the researcher carried out a research. The type of this research is quantitative because the data consist of figures and she uses statistical formulas to analyze them. The research was carried out at SLTP Kanisius Santo Yusup Mertoyudan Magelang Regency on 21 st October, 2003. The population of the research consists of all the third-year students of the school numbering 58, whereas the number of samples is 30 out of the number of population. The researcher took the samples by simple random sampling technique.
There are two variables in this research, namely preposition mastery as the independent variable symbolized with the letter X, and students' English writing descriptive ability as the dependent variable symbolized with the letter Y.
After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed them using statistical formulas. The result of the product moment correlation analysis is 0.804 and the correlation value of the product moment analysis a 5% on the level of significance is 0. 361. It shows that the r count is higher than the figure shown on the r table, therefore there is a significant influence of the students' preposition mastery on their English descriptive writing ability. To know the contribution given by preposition mastery on English descriptive writing ability, she analyzed the data by liniar regression formula. The result of the analysis is as follows: Y = 1.929 +0.488 (X) It means that each increase of one unit of one standard deviation of preposition mastery will be followed by the increase of one unit of one standard deviation of English descriptive writing ability. The percentage of contribution of preposition mastery to English descriptive writing ability is 4.095% and the rest 95.905 % is influenced by other factors.
