Yunita Indah S. (2003) The Influence of Reading Motivation to the Reading Comprehension Ability of the First-Year Students of SMUN | Pringsurat Temanggung Regency in the School Year 2002 2003. Paper, Magelang. English Department, Faculty of Education and Teachers' Training, Tidar University of Magelang
This research is aimed to prove that students' reading motivation has a significant correlation to their reading comprehension ability.
The students' ability to understand reading texts can be influenced by two factors, namely the linguistic and non-linguistic factors. One of the linguistic factors is language system and the non-linguistic factors include students' experience, attitude, motivation, habits and personality. Those two factors much influence the students' achievement of learning English, especially their reading comprehension ability. Thus, both the linguistic and non-linguistic factors much influence the students' reading comprehension ability to understand the reading texts.
From the above explanations, the researcher puts forward the hypotheses as follows.
1. There is a significant influence of reading motivation on reading comprehension ability.
2. There is a significant contribution of reading motivation to reading comprehension ability.
To prove those hypotheses, the researcher carried out a research on the first year students of SMUN 1 Pringsurat Temanggung Regency. The researcher took 40 out of 128 students as samples. The samples were given two kinds of tests; the reading motivation test and the reading comprehension ability test.
After giving those two kinds of tests to the respondents, the researcher analysed the result by using the r-product moment correlation formula to find out the strength of the relationship between the two variables. Then the results were consulted to the table of significance level. To know the contribution, the researcher used the linear regression formula.
The results of statistical calculation are as follows: r count is 0.720 and the figure in r table is 0.304. The linear regression analysis Y-3.522012932 + 1.033239995 (Χ) shows that the correlation of the two variables is significant. The contribution of reading motivation to reading comprehension ability is 51.88%.
Based on the analysis above, the researcher sums up that there is a significant correlation between the students' reading motivation and the reading comprehension ability of the first year students of SMUN I Pringsurat Temanggung Regency in the school year 2002/2003. It is concluded that 51.88% of students' reading comprehension ability is influenced by reading motivation and 48.12% of students' reading ability is influenced by other factors.
