Reading ability is one of the language skills that is very important in teaching learning of English In fact the students' reading ability is very low. This condition above is caused by two factors namely internal and external factors. This study is focused on one internal factor that is psychological factors. One of the factors is students interest in English text on their reading comprehension. The writer believes that this factor has a significant influence toward students reading comprehension.
The objectives of this study is to describe whether or not there is significant influence of students' interest in English texts and their reading comprehension. Besides, this study is also aimed at seeing how much contribution that is given by the students' interest in English texts on their reading comprehension.
By reviewing related theories, the writer can assume two hypothesis as follows:
1. There is positive and significant relationship between student's interest in English texts and their reading comprehension.
2. There is influence of students' interest in English texts on their reading comprehension.
This study involved the second year students of SMU K II Magelang in the school year 2002-2003. The number of sample was 58 out of 119 students. To collect the data of students' interest in English texts, a questionnaire was utilized. While to get the data of reading comprehension achievement, a test was used. The data were analyzed by Product Moment Correlation and Linear Regression Analysis.
Based on the analysis result of Product Moment Correlation it was found that r count is 0,65966972597 and the figure shown on r table is 0,258. It means that the above hypothesis is proved. Then the linear regression analysis y 4,04408490599 + 0,93584259054 (x), shows that the correlation of the two variables is significant. The contribution of the student's interest in English texts in their reading comprehension is 43,51%.
Finally the writer draws a conclusion that 43,51 % of students' reading comprehension is influenced by the students' interest in Englist texts. And the rest is influenced by other factors.
