Keywords: Teaching Media, Speaking Skills, Hopscotch.
The research started with several issues that were raised in elementary schools. Currently, Traditional games such as Hopscotch or Engklek are becoming increasingly rare in the neighbourhood. Children today are losing the knowledge of how to play them. This suggests that the essential cultural traditions associated with these games are slowly disappearing from the younger generation. In another way, in a school environment, students have difficulties learning English, especially speaking skills; they lack confidence when communicating in English. This study has three research objectives in response to the abovementioned problems. First, to understand the difficulties of teaching speaking in this situation and the challenges of teaching speaking skills using traditional media for elementary school students. The second is to develop and adapt traditional hopscotch as an effective teaching medium to improve speaking skills in elementary school students, and the third is to know and find out if traditional hopscotch is effective in improving students' daily conversation and vocabulary and if it positively impacts the development of their speaking skills by implementing it in schools.
To achieve those three objectives, this study used the methodology of Research and Development (RND) by branch using five steps, Analysis-Design- Development-Implementation-Evaluation. Specifically, this research produced a product in the form of educational media to improve the speaking skills of elementary school students. The analysis shows that teachers and students find the English language difficult to learn, and need media that support enthusiasm and vitality in the class and also need interactive learning media like games. The analysis results in the second and third stages of design and development resulted in material design, design design with storyboards, and varied hopscotch media.
In the fourth stage, to assess the effectiveness of the media, the writer uses an experimental group pre-test and post-test and the results show that during the pre-test the average score that students get is 56.1579 and increases in the average post-test given after treatment with hopscotch media which is 82.0526 proving that this media is effective for student learning. In the final stage of media evaluation, it was evaluated by two experts. It showed a result of score of the media evaluation is 83. The score of the media evaluation is 79, proving that both of them gave the media a very feasible score., which shows that this media product is suitable for use. When using the product later, it is recommended that teachers give students a sense of enthusiasm, high curiosity, and high self-confidence as well as to arouse students' interest in speaking English
