Keywords: Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Teaching Strategy, Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension entails reading, understanding, and obtaining meaning. Students must relate their existing knowledge to their reading text to improve reading comprehension. In fact, some students have difficulty with reading comprehension, including unfamiliar vocabulary, a lack of attention, and uninterest in the English lesson. In teaching reading comprehension, an effective strategy, such as the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire strategy, is required to facilitate a teacher's lesson delivery and ensure all students learn the material well and pleasantly.
This study aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in eighth graders reading comprehension when using Who Wants to be a Millionaire strategy and to find out how effective the strategy is in improving the reading comprehension of eighth graders at SMPIT Ihsanul Fikri Kota Magelang. This study used a quantitative type of Quasi-Experimental research with Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The population of this study was all eighth graders at SMPIT Ihsanul Fikri Kota Magelang. The sampling technique used was the purposive sampling technique. Purposive sampling is a non-probability sampling technique in which the writer selects participants based on specific characteristics, especially students' reading comprehension in English lessons is still low. The instrument used to determine students' reading comprehension was a test using 40 multiple-choice questions for the pretest and posttest. The data analysis techniques used were independent sample t-test and normalized gain. Based on the descriptive analysis, the two groups' average was obtained; the experimental group using Who Wants to be a Millionaire strategy as a learning strategy obtained an average posttest value of 82.38. In the control group using Reading Aloud strategy, the posttest average was 72.34. Based on the results of inferential analysis, Independent Sample t-test, the tcount value of 4.472 was obtained, meaning that the tcount (4.472) > ttable (2.042) and the Sig. (2-tailed) > α, which is 0.000 < 0.05. From the results of the N-gain test, the average N-gain in the experimental group was 0.42, while in the control group, it was 0.12. These results indicate that the reading comprehension score of students taught using Who Wants to be a Millionaire strategy is significantly different from that of students taught using Reading Aloud strategy. Moreover, the strategy applied to the experimental group was medium effective in improving students' reading comprehension. This study suggests English teachers apply Who Wants to be a Millionaire strategy in the classroom to improve students' reading comprehension.
