SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING DISCOVERY LEARNING WITH QUIZIZZ TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING SKILLS IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMP NEGERI 1 TEMPURAN

Reading comprehension is a multifaceted cognitive process that demands students to remain attentive and reflective. It requires students to consistently keep track of words and their meanings when reading. Based on the writer's observations at SMP Negeri 1 Tempuran, eighth-grade students demonstrated low reading comprehension skills, as reflected in their average scores. This research sought to evaluate the efficacy of Discovery Learning using Quizizz in enhancing students' reading proficiency in descriptive texts and to compare its effectiveness with Discovery Learning employing Kahoot.
The study adopted a quasi-experimental framework, encompassing two groups: Class 8F (n=31), functioning as the experimental group and receiving instruction via the Quizizz platform, and Class 8G (n=32), serving as the control group and instructed through Kahoot. The participant selection process employed a purposive sampling methodology to ensure alignment with the study's specific objectives.
Empirical findings revealed a notable enhancement in the reading skills of the experimental group, as evidenced by an increase in their mean scores from 36.94 (pre-test) to 80.48 (post-test). Similarly, the control group improved their scores from 53.44 to 74.84. Statistical analyses substantiated a significant disparity between the two groups (p = 0.000, where p < 0.05). Furthermore, the N-Gain analysis for the experimental group yielded a value of 0.68, indicating a medium level of effectiveness in fostering learning outcomes.
The results of this study indicate that the implementation of Discovery Learning facilitated through Quizizz proves to be more effective than using Kahoot in enhancing reading comprehension, particularly in the context of reading descriptive text. The interactive features embedded in Quizizz promote heightened student engagement and motivation levels, underscoring its potential as a transformative tool for integrating technology into English language education.
