SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF PAUSES IN ORAL PRESENTATIONS BY THE FIFTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITAS TIDAR
Keywords: Pauses, Oral Presentations, English Education Department Students
Effective communication skills are crucial for the academic success and professional development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) undergraduates.
However, many Indonesian students face difficulties speaking English fluently, particularly in oral presentations. This study examines the use of pauses in oral presentations by students in the English Education Department at Universitas Tidar. It aims to determine various types of pauses employed by students and the factors contributing to them.
This study applies Rose's (1998) theory regarding the types of pauses, which include unlexicalized pauses and lexicalized pauses. It used the qualitative research method with discourse analysis and utilizing two data collection instruments, audio recording and interview.
Audio recordings were used to identify the types of pauses, while the interview explored the factors affecting pause production. One group from each of the four classes was selected as respondents in this study, and one person from each group was chosen to be interviewed.
As a result, the writer found 397 pauses used by students in their presentations. The pauses are divided into 265 unlexicalized pauses (UP) and 132 lexicalized pauses (LP). The most frequent types of unlexicalized pauses were eh which appeared 177 times or 67%, whereas the most frequent types of lexicalized pauses were so which appeared 60 times or 45% followed by like which appeared 55 times or 42%. In addition, the factors affecting pause production showed that thinking and word searching highly addressed as the main factors to produce pauses.
Future researchers might broaden the scope of their studies on students’ pauses during presentations. Researchers might investigate whether there is a relationship between the length of time students spend presenting and the frequency of pauses utilized during presentations. Researchers may also compare students’ pause behaviors in different situations, such as formal presentations, group discussions, or speaking tasks, to discover if pause frequency varies depending on the setting.
