SKRIPSI USING PICTIONARY AND WORD SQUARE GAME IN ENHANCING THE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE THIRD GRADERS OF SD NEGERI GUNUNGPRING 4

Vocabulary is one component that connects the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In addition, students cannot effectively use the target language if they lack sufficient understanding of words and their meanings. However, the writer identified several issues that the third graders were facing vocabulary mastery. In this study, the combination of Pictionary and Word Square Game was implemented to enhance the students’ motivation and vocabulary mastery.
This study has two objectives. Firstly, to investigate whether the use of Pictionary and Word Square game can enhance the motivation of the third graders of SD Negeri Gunungpring 4 in learning English. Secondly, to find out whether Pictionary and Word Square game can enhance the vocabulary mastery of the third graders of SD Negeri Gunungpring 4. The writer conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR), which included three cycles: Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. There were 29 students of third graders of SD Negeri Gunungpring 4 in academic year 2023/2024 that became the subjects of this research. Furthermore, the writer utilized observation, questionnaire, documentation and test to support the data.
The results of this study revealed a good enhancement in students’ motivation in learning English after using Pictionary and Word Square Game. It could be seen from the result of observation and questionnaire in each cycles. In the Pre-Cycle, the results of the observation was 42.52%, in the Cycle I, the result was 81.68%, and in the Cycle II, it as 83.90%. The implementation of Pictionary and Word Square game also enhanced students vocabulary mastery. This result was confirmed by the test score. The average score in Pre-cycle was 63.10, in the Cycle I was 73.45 and in the Cycle II was 82.90.
The writer can draw the conclusion that Pictionary and Word Square game helps to enhance the students’ motivation and students’ vocabulary mastery of the third graders of SD Negeri Gunungpring 4, Muntilan. Lastly, the writer recommends the teacher to implement Pictionary and Word Square game as alternative tools in teaching English vocabulary.
