SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF DISCOURSE MARKERS USED IN THE FEATURE-LENGTH MOVIE '1917' BY SAM MENDES AND ITS IMPLICATION IN ENHANCING EFL STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILLS
Discourse markers (DMs) play a key role in both written and spoken English by
enhancing coherence, clarity, and fluency in communication. The movie 1917
provides a practical representation of these markers. This study seeks to answer the
following questions: 1) What are the most frequently used discourse markers in
1917? 2) What functions do the discourse markers have in 1917? 3) How do
discourse markers in the 1917 movie implicate EFL students' speaking skills?
This study applied Fung and Carter's (2007) Multi-Categorial Framework
of Discourse Markers to analyze the types and functions of discourse markers in the
movie 1917. The framework guided the exploration of how these markers are used
in the movie. The research follows a discourse analysis approach, with the Multi
Categorial Framework of Discourse Markers by Fung and Carter (2007) serving as
the primary analytical tool. The data was collected through documentation, and the
study also employed dependability triangulation as suggested by Lincoln and Guba
(1985).
The study identified 168 different types of discourse markers in the movie
1917, with the most frequently used markers being “and,” “oh,” “alright,” “well,”
and “yes.” This study shows that the movie 1917 effectively illustrates the use of
discourse markers in authentic conversations, identifying 32 distinct markers used
in various contexts.
After validation, 168 DMs were found, covering all categories from Fung
and Carter’s (2007) Multi-Categorial Framework, with each category serving
different functions in dialogue. The study also suggests that understanding and
using DMs can improve speaking skills by facilitating smoother transitions and
enhancing conversational coherence. For B1-level EFL students, incorporating
DM-focused lessons into speaking practice can lead to more natural and cohesive
conversations. As authentic sources, movies show learners how DMs guide
conversations, clarify opinions, and manage interactions. Teachers can provide
structured, real-life practice that boosts students' confidence and proficiency in
English communication by using movies and developing lesson plans focused on
DMs.
