SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING SPEECH ACT OF STUDENTS’ PROJECT IN AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION CLASS FOR THE THIRD SEMESTER OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Speech act plays a crucial role in translation activity, because speech act helps to deliver and understand t a message from one language to another. Analyzing types and functions of speech act leads people to compose meaning of a sentence in order to gain information. In essence, speech act facilitates cross-culture communication effectively and efficiently.
The objectives of this study are: (1) To identify types and functions of speech act used in students’ project; (2) To find out the most dominant speech act type and function used in students’ project. This research ses material and theory of speech
act by Yule (1996) in his book called “Pragmatic.” The type this present study is qualitative content analysis. The data source selected from the subtitle of video project. The subtitles are in the form of sentences conversation. The writer emphasizes to identify the meaning of sentences. The data collection technique used is transcribing and documentation. The writer assesses data validity by using investigator triangulation. The writer asks for help from English Education lecturer from Universitas Tidar to assess the analysis form. The result demonstrates that there are five types of speech namely directive, representative, declarative, expressive, and commissive. In terms of functions, there are 19 categorizes namely asking, requesting, informing, naming, guessing, claiming, suggesting, complementing, inviting, planning, gratifying, hoping, surprising, approving, apologizing, congratulating, denying, pitying, and thanking. In addition, directive speech act and asking function put the highest rank of type and function. Consequently, the writer concludes that sentences created to give direct statement command from speaker to listener.
It is suggested for future writers to enhance and develop the similar topic with diverse method, tools, or resources to create deeper analysis of speech act used in teaching and learning communication.
