Keywords: Violation of Maxims, Cooperative Principle, Classroom Interaction
Communication in the English classroom interaction must be interactive due to the important role of interaction in the English classroom that is often linked with success or failure in the teaching and learning process. To achieve successful communication in the classroom, both the teacher and students are required to be clear, relevant, straightforward, obvious, and truthful in delivering the message. In line with this, the cooperative principle is important to be applied in communication to achieve success in the teaching and learning process. The cooperative principle proposed the four types of maxims which help the
speaker to conduct communication effectively. However, the writer found that there were violations of maxims that appeared in the classroom interaction at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Magelang.
The study aimed to find the types of violation of maxims that appeared in the classroom interaction. The writer also analyzed the perspective of the teacher and the students toward the violation of maxims that happened in the classroom interaction among the teacher and students at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Magelang.
The study employed a qualitative approach to find out the types of violation of maxims and the perspective of the teacher and students toward the violation of maxims. There were two subjects in this study: the English teacher and 32 eighth graders as the sample of this study. The writer collected the data in the form of utterances through video recording. Additionally, a questionnaire and interview were applied to collect the students’ and the teacher’s perspectives.
The result of this study indicated that four types of maxims were violated in the classroom interaction. The violations included 38,8% violation of maxim quality, 22,2% violation of maxim quantity, 22,2% violation of maxim relevance, and 16,6 violation of maxim manners. The findings indicated that students often violate Grice's maxims mainly because they do not fully understand the subject matter. The majority of the students
find it challenging to give responses that are adequate, relevant, and clear due to their limited comprehension. The teacher saw the violations as signs of students’ limited understanding of the subject and acknowledged the violation of the maxim could encourage social interaction and collaboration among students. The writer suggests that the teacher should acknowledge the potential drawbacks of the violation of maxims in the classroom. The understanding can help the teacher to evaluate and conduct effective communication in the teaching and learning activity. Furthermore, the future researcher can develop a study related to the violation of maxim in the classroom with a boarder scope in the future.
