SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GOOGLE ASSISTANT LEARNING MEDIA IN SPEAKING SKILL FOR THE EIGHTH GRADERS AT SMP NEGERI 1 KOTA MAGELANG

The lack of speaking skill among students was the main reason of the writer to conduct this study. This happened due to the fear of making mistake and the use of monotone learning media in teaching speaking. The writer proposed Google Assistant as the solution for the problem. Google Assistant is an advanced voice interface and artificial intelligence technology that enables language learners to engage in meaningful conversations in the target language. The study aimed to find the effectiveness of Google Assistant as learning media for the eighth graders’ speaking skills. The writer also analysed the specific element of speaking in which Google Assistant is effective for students’ speaking skill. Additionally, this study examined if there is any significant difference between eighth graders’ speaking skills of SMP Negeri 1 Kota Magelang who are taught using Google Assistant as learning media and those who are not. The study employed Quantitative approach, specifically utilising a quasiexperimental design to find out the effectiveness of Google Assistant for the eighth graders’ speaking skill. The writer carried out the study at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Magelang. This study recruited 64 eighth graders as the sample at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Magelang. The sample was divided into two groups, which was the experimental group and the control group. The students engaged in the speaking learning activity using Google Assistant and ELSA Speak for three weeks. The result of the study demonstrated that Google Assistant is effective for the eighth graders’ speaking skill at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Magelang. The Google Assistant is effective for five elements of speaking including comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Moreover, the study revealed that there is significant different between eighth graders’ speaking skills of SMP Negeri 1 Kota Magelang who are taught using Google Assistant as learning media and those who are not. The writer recommends that the teacher may utilize Google Assistant as learning media in teaching English, especially in teaching speaking due to the various advantages that can be considered. Furthermore, the future researcher can conduct more in-depth case studies to expose the challenge in using Google Assistant as learning media and explore various Google Assistant’ activities based on the elements of speaking skill for the students
