SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PLEASE STRATEGY TO INCREASE THE DESCRIPTIVE TEXT WRITING SKILL OF THE EIGHT GRADERS OF SMPN 5 MAGELANG
Along with speaking, listening, and reading, writing is one of the most
fundamental skills students at all educational levels need to acquire. It enables
students to express their ideas, knowledge, and opinions in an organized and
concise way. According to the writer's observations at SMPN 5 Magelang,
students found it difficult to express their ideas in writing; as a result, they
struggled to construct sentences into paragraphs and required more time to write
and reflect. Additionally, when teaching English writing, teachers usually use
monotonous strategies. The PLEASE strategy is one of the learning strategies that
teachers can employ to help students increase their writing skill.
The object of this study is to find out if there is a difference in descriptive
writing skill between students taught using the PLEASE strategy and those taught
using the Group Investigation strategy and to determine how effective the
PLEASE strategy is to increase student's descriptive writing skill.
This study implemented quantitative research with a true experimental
design. In conducting the research, the writer chose 8G and 8H as the sample. The
writer used a test, which was a pretest and post-test in the form of an essay, to
collect the data. In analyzing the data, the writer used SPSS V2.
Based on the Mann-Whitney test, the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.00, which was
lower than the level of significance determined (0.05). It means that the
alternative hypothesis was accepted and can be interpreted that there is a
difference in descriptive writing skill between the two groups. Moreover, based on
the N-gain test, the average score of the experimental class was 71.89%, which
belonged to the effective enough category. This score was higher than the control
group, which was only 66.25%. In conclusion, the implementation of the
PLEASE strategy to increase the descriptive writing skill of the eighth graders
was more effective than the Group Investigation strategy.
