Gerund is an essential component of grammar that cannot be ignored. By
tacking on the suffix -ing to the end of a verb, the English gerund is able to
transform a verb into a noun. Thus, having the ability to understand gerunds is
very important. Gerunds can be found in various text genres. The writer finds
gerunds in student analytical exposition texts. However, in the language feature
text there are no gerunds mentioned. Therefore, the writer is interested in
analyzing gerunds in analytical exposition texts.
The objectives of this study were to know the kinds and the function of gerund
in analytical exposition text. Also, the most dominant kinds and function were
used in analytical exposition text written by the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 7
Purworejo in the school year 2023/2024.
The type of this study was descriptive qualitative. The documentation
technique served as the data collection method. The data came from analytical
exposition texts that were written by the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 7
Purworejo. The writer obtained 15 analytical exposition texts to be examined
using Azar and Hagen (2009) and Wishon and Burks (1998).
The result of this study shows that 46 gerunds consist of two kinds of gerund.
Among these kinds, simple gerund was the most frequently used, accounting for
69,5% of the total gerund observed. Gerund phrase followed by 30,5% to sum up
the total percentages. The result for the function of gerund shows that gerund as
subject was the most frequent used in analytical exposition text, followed with
51,1%. Gerund as direct object (13,1%), gerund as subject complement (8,7%),
gerund as object preposition (26,1%). The presence of gerund as noun creates the
noun or topic discussed in analytical exposition texts. The study’s pedagogical
implication is the students understand both kinds and function of gerund and use it
in their writing, they can compose good analytical exposition texts.
