SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PODCAST MEDIA IN LEARNING REPORT TEXT SPEAKING SKILLS IN CLASS X SMA NEGERI 2 MAGELANG
Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning, but speaking in English
remains challenging for EFL students due to limited vocabulary, lack of exposure
to natural language models, and insufficient use of technology-based learning tools.
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of podcast media in improving the
speaking skills of class X students, particularly in Report Text material.
This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design.
The sample was selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 70 students of
SMA Negeri 2 Magelang. The students were divided into two groups: 35 students
from class X-7 as the experimental class taught using podcast media and 35 students
from class X-2 as the control class taught using picture-based media. Data were
collected through documentation, pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Data analysis
included normality test, homogeneity test, and t-test using SPSS 25.
The experimental class showed a notable improvement, with the mean pre
test score of 75.89 increasing to 83.46 in the post-test, reflecting an increase of 7.57
points. In contrast, the control class showed a smaller improvement, with the mean
pre-test score of 73.74 increasing to 76.17 in the post-test, reflecting a gain of 2.43
points. The significance value (2-tailed) for the experimental class was 0.000 and
for the control class was 0.010, both lower than the significance level (α = 0.05).
The calculated t-value (10.28) exceeded the t-table value (2.00), indicating a
significant difference between the two groups.
These findings suggest that podcast media is more effective than picture
based media in enhancing pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and
overall speaking skills. Teachers are encouraged to adopt podcast media to improve
students’ speaking performance, and future research should explore qualitative
insights into podcast media's role in language learning.
