Writing is one of the most essential skills students must master in learning English. Students can pour their ideas, feelings, and opinions into writing. Based on the interview conducted with the teachers of eighth grade students at SMP N 9 Magelang, many students lacked vocabulary, had difficulty finding ideas for writing, and had less varied learning strategies. Therefore, one solution to overcome this is implementing a new strategy using the Wholesome Scattering Game.
This study has two objectives. The first objective is to know if there is any significant difference in eighth-grade students' improvement in writing descriptive text who are taught using Wholesome Scattering Game and those who are not. The second objective is to find out how effective Wholesome Scattering Game in improving eighth-grade students' descriptive text writing skills.
This study used quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design in nonequivalent control group design. The participants in this study were 62 eighth graders at SMP N 9 Magelang. The students were divided into the experimental class and the control class. In this design, a pre-test and a post-test were given to students.
Based on the hypothesis test, the sig value. (2-tailed) from the Independent Sample t-test test was 0.000. This value was lower than the significance level of 0.05. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted or that the strategy implemented significantly different between the two groups, with different treatments.
The N-gain test was tested to investigate the strategy's effectiveness. Based on the average, the score obtained in the experimental group was 56.4%, which belonged to the ‘effective enough’ category, while the control group was 43.4%, which belonged to the ‘less effective’ category. It can be interpreted that a Wholesome Scattering Game for eighth-grade students in SMP N 9 Magelang is more effective than using a Scramble Game on descriptive text.
