SKRIPSI FLOUTING MAXIM ANALYSIS IN TOUR-GUIDING ACTIVITIES OF BOROBUDUR TEMPLE: AN INVESTIGATION OF ENGLISH INTERNSHIP STUDENT

Flouting maxims can be used for various purposes, such as humor, irony, sarcasm, politeness, etc. For instance, a speaker might flout the quantity maxim by stating too much or too little than expected or necessary. This can create a humorous or ironic effect or imply a criticism or a compliment. Flouting maxims is an important pragmatic skill that can enrich speakers’ language use and enhance their communicative effectiveness.
The writer explored the flouting of maxims used in Borobudur Temple, which occurs between the internship students who are the temple's tour guides and the tourists. Knowing about flouting maxims is hoped to improve communication with interlocutors since the message is intelligible and relevant.
In this study, the writer employed a qualitative method to examine the flouting of maxims during tour-guiding activities at Borobudur Temple. The primary data for this analysis came from conversations between the tour guide and the tourists, which were recorded on the writer's phone.
The study identified four categories of flouting maxims often used during tour-guiding activity at Borobudur Temple: quantity, quality, relation, and manner. Among them, the flouting of the quality maxim was the most common, accounting for 68.6% of the cases and happening 24 times out of 35. The flouting of the way maxim came in second, accounting for 14.3% of the incidents (5 of 35). This was followed by a flouting of the quantity maxim, which occurred 11.4% of the time (4 of 35). Finally, flouting the relation maxim was the least common, accounting for only 5.7% of the occurrences and happening twice in the examined interactions.
The studies also found that banter was the most prevalent strategy for flouting maxims utilized in the conversation between the tour guide and the tourists to Borobudur Temple. In addition, the proportion of banter is 15, which is the most among the other flouting maxim tactics. As a result, the quality flouting maxim is employed more than the other flouting maxims. The amount flouting maxim follows on from the method flouting maxim. The relation maxim, in turn, is the least dominating sort of flouting maxim that happened in the conversation between the tour guide and the tourists during the tour-guiding activities in Borobudur Temple.
