SKRIPSI USING VISUAL NOVEL AS A LEARNING MEDIA TO IMPROVE THE EIGHTH-GRADERS’ READING SKILL IN SMP IPBS TUNAS BANGSA

English as a foreign language is one of essential subjects in junior and senior high school in Indonesia. Unfortunately, many students struggled with reading tasks. Moreover, students have difficulty to find motivation and interest in reading English text.
This research examines the use of visual novel as learning media to improve the students’ reading skill, Visual Novel can be the fun learning media solution in SMP IPBS Tunas Bangsa. This research aims to know any significance improvement of the students’ reading skill who are taught using visual novel as a learning media, and to understand the students’ motivation for using visual novel as a learning media to improve their reading skill.
This study used a mixed-method approach with a concurrent triangulation strategy. The quantitative component used a one-group pre test - post test quasiexperiment to investigate the significance improvement in students' reading skills.
These students were taught using visual novel as a learning media. Data was collected through pre test and post test, administered before and after the treatment to measure the students’ reading skill improvement. The qualitative component aimed to understand students' motivation for using visual novel as a media to learn reading texts. Observation and questionnaire sheets were used to gather information about students’ motivation for using visual novel as a learning media. The subjects of this research were 21 students from class 8B.
The t-test result shows that the sig (2-tailed) was 0.001 kurang dari 0.05. It can be said that there is significance improvement of the students’ reading skill who are taught using visual novel as a learning media. Additionally, the observation and questionnaire sheets show that the students have high motivation for using visual novel as a learning media to improve their reading skill. Since it is proven that using visual novel as a learning media can improve students’ reading skill and students have high motivation for using visual novel as a learning media to improve their reading skill. Thus, the writer wants to suggest that future writers employ similar research, with visual novel as a learning media with a different research design.
