SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WORD SEARCH PUZZLE IN TEACHING VOCABULARY TO THE FIFTH GRADERS OF SD MUHAMMADIYAH TAMANAGUNG MUNTILAN
Vocabulary is essential for effective communication. However, students at SD Muhammdiyah Tamangung Muntian exhibit a deficiency in vocabulary proficiency. This challenge can be attributed to various factors, notably the application of suboptimal teaching strategies. To tackle this issue, the present study investigates the use of the Word Search Puzzle as a vocabulary instruction method for fifth-grade students at SD Muhammdiyah Tamangung Muntilan during the 2024/2025 academic year. The primary aim of this research is to compare vocabulary mastery between students instructed with the Word Search Puzzle and those receiving traditional textbooks. Additionally, the study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the Word Search Puzzle in enhancing students' vocabulary skills. An experimental research design was employed, involving 52 fifth-grade students from SD Muhammdiyah Tamangung Muntilan. The participants were divided into groups: a control group of 26 students and an experimental group of 26 students. a test served as the research instrument, administered in two phases
first as a pre-test and subsequently as a post-test. To evaluate students' performance, the writer applied Brown’s (2004) analytic scoring rubric. The quantitative data collected were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test in SPSS 22, as the data were homogeneous but not normallydistributed. The analysis a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, which is below the 0.05 significance level, indicating a statically significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, the N-gain score for the group utilizing the Word Search Puzzle was
68.84% reflecting a moderate effectiveness in improving vocabulary mastery. Given that the Word Search Puzzle has demonstrated its potential to enhance vocabulary skills, it can be concluded that this instructional method is an effective approach to vocabulary acquisition. Thewriter also suggests that subsequent studies should explore the broader application of the Word Search Puzzle in vocabulary instruction.
