SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DEMOCRATIC VOTE STRATEGY USING MINDMEISTER ON HORTATORY EXPOSITION TEXT SPEAKING SKILLS OF THE TENTH GRADERS AT SMAN 2 MAGELANG
Speaking is a productive language skill that requires complex cognitive process. As such, it is often considered one of the more challenging skills for students to master. Many learners experience difficulties in organizing their thoughts and expressing
them clearly, especially in structured texts like hortatory exposition. Additionally, not all teachers apply appropriate teaching strategies that effectively support students in developing their speaking performance. One of the innovative strategies and media that can be used to overcome this challenge is the democratic vote strategy integrated with MindMeister. This study aimed to determine whether there is a significant difference in the hortatory exposition speaking skills of students who were taught using the democratic vote strategy with MindMeister compared to those taught using jigsaw strategy, and assess the effectiveness of this approach in improving students’ speaking abilities. A quantitative approach was applied through a quasi-experimental method using a non-equivalent control group design involving pretest and post-test. This research sample consisted of 71 tenth grade students at SMAN 2 Magelang, divided into an experimental group and a control group. Based on the analysis using the independent sample t-test, the obtained sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000, which is lower than the 0.05 significance level. This indicates that the implementation of the two different strategies had a statistically significant impact on students’ speaking performance. Furthermore, the N-Gain test showed that the experimental group achieved an average improvement score of 65.83%, which is classified as effective enough, while the control group gained 44.28%, categorized as less effective. In conclusion, the use of the democratic vote strategy with MindMeister was proven to be more effective in enhancing the hortatory exposition speaking skills of the tenth graders at SMAN 2Magelang compared to the jigsaw strategy. Although both strategies are beneficial, the democratic vote approach showed superior results in the particular speaking material and context.
