Movies are one of the learning media in this era of massive technological
development. Therefore, a well-organized script is needed to create a good movie.
The Creative Writing: Drama and Theater course accommodates literature learning
in the English Education Department. In this course, students are expected to be
able to write movie scripts that are used as a guide in making an educational short
movie as their final project. However, students’ lack of knowledge about writing
movie scripts hinders the production of well-structured scripts.
This study aims to answer three objectives based on this problem. First,
identify and explain the needs analysis in developing a manual book for movie
script writing. Second, describe the design and development stages in developing a
manual book for movie script writing. Third, explain the feasibility of a manual
book for movie script writing.
This study uses the Design and Development Research (DDR) method to
answer these three objectives. The DDR model has three phases: analysis, design
and development, and evaluation. This study is included in the DDR type of product
and tool research because the writer makes a product of a manual book.
The analysis phase showed that students in the Creative Writing: Drama
and Theater course needed a manual book to write a movie script, especially one
that contained material about movie script writing format and writing processes.
The writer was directed to design and develop material drafts, design storyboards,
and prototype a manual book from the analysis results. Furthermore, the prototype
manual book is in the evaluation phase and has been validated by two experts.
The validation results by the two experts show that the prototype manual
book is categorized as feasible. In the material aspect, it obtained a result of 95.83%,
and in the media aspect, it obtained a result of 93.75%. The manual book is
packaged in the form of a flipbook called SMArt, an abbreviation from Script
Manual of Artful Writing. Hopefully, this manual can improve students’ skills in
writing movie scripts.
