SKRIPSI THE IMPACT OF MULTILINGUAL FILMS ON LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using a multilingual film as a medium to improve the listening skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Ma’arif Dawung. Specifically, the research sought to determine whether the multilingual film could significantly enhance students’ listening skills compared to conventional audio-based learning methods.
The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group, involving 80 students divided in two classes; the experimental class (38 students) and the control class (42 students). The experimental class received a treatment of watching the multilingual film to enhance their listening skills, while the control class followed conventional methods using standard audio-based materials.
Pre-test and post-test assessments measured students' listening proficiency, focusing on macro-listening skills (recognizing main ideas, understanding specific details) and micro-listening skills (word boundaries and sentence segmentation). Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U Test (p = 0.000) confirmed a significant difference between the two groups, with the experimental class showing a mean score increase of 16.32 points, compared to 7.85 points in the control group.
The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test further validated that no students in the experimental group experienced a decline in scores. This study concludes that multilingual films are effective as an alternative to traditional listening instruction in improving listening skills, offering engaging and realistic language exposure, particularly for students who struggle to meet the minimum passing grade (KKM). The study recommends the integration of multilingual films into English language teaching and encourages further research on their long-term impact on other language skills, such as speaking and reading skills.
