SKRIPSI TRANSITIVITY IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK: A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF “PATHWAY TO ENGLISH TEXT BOOK” FOR SMA/MA GRADE X

WIDYA MAS MARDAVAM JAYANTI - Nama Orang;

Language plays a central role in education as a tool for communication, knowledge acquisition, and shaping students’ understanding of the world. In language learning, textbooks serve as essential instruments that transmit linguistic content and
influence learners’ perceptions of language structures and social roles. In Indonesia, English textbooks are expected to align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to ensure communicative competence at various education levels. However, recent research indicates that many high school English textbooks fall short of the expected CEFR B1 level. To address this issue, this study investigates the representation of transitivity processes in the Pathway to English textbook for SMA/MA Grade X, focusing on how language structures support students' linguistic and cognitive development. Considering the problems above, this research applied descriptive qualitative to fulfil two objectives. First, it determined the distribution of transitivity
processes in the reading parts of ‘Pathway to English for SMA/MA Grade X’, and second, it analyzed the representation of participants in the transitivity process in the reading parts of ‘Pathway to English for SMA/MA Grade X’. This research used discourse analysis to examine the transitivity system based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), particularly the framework by Gerot and Wignell. The study analyzes 297 clauses taken from selected reading texts in the textbook, specifically from the “Lead In” and “Let’sAnalyze” sections. It focuses on identifying the types of transitivity processes material, mental, relational, verbal, behavioral, existential, and meteorological and how participants are represented in each.
