Keywords: DeepL, Analytical Exposition Writing, Translation Tools, Writing Skill, Educational Technology.
In today's digital era, many students, particularly those in vocational high schools, face challenges in writing analytical exposition texts. However, writing is a crucial skill that supports academic achievement and opens up future professional opportunities. One promising solution to this challenge is the integration of technology-based learning media. One such platform is DeepL, an artificial intelligence-based translation system recognized for high accuracy and a user- friendly interface. This study examines the effectiveness of using the DeepL Web to enhance the analytical exposition writing skills of second-grade students at SMK N 2 Magelang. Specifically, the study compares the writing performance of students who use DeepL with the performance of students who use Google Translate. The present study employed a quasi-experimental method with a non- equivalent control group design. Two classes were selected for the study; one class was designated as the experimental group and used DeepL for translation, while the other class was designated as the control group and used Google Translate. The experimental group was administered a series of assessments, including pre-test and post-test measures, to evaluate their writing proficiency. The data were subjected to analysis using an independent sample t-test and a calculation of effect size employing Cohen's d. This finding indicates that the utilization of DeepL is effective in fostering analytical exposition writing skills among students. The mean post-test score of the experimental class was 68.06, which was significantly higher than the mean score of 62.22 obtained by the control class. The effect size (Cohen's d = -1.077) demonstrated a substantial effect, underscoring the significant impact of DeepL on students' performance. The findings of this study provide substantiation for the alternative hypothesis, thereby corroborating the existence of a substantial discrepancy between the two groups. In light of the findings, DeepL Translator serves as a valuable supplementary tool in the English writing learning process. The platform supports the development of writing skill through accurate translation assistance, vocabulary enhancement, and structural guidance. In the future, research should examine the long-term implementation of DeepL in collaboration with other instructional strategies to further strengthen writing skills across diverse educational settings.
