SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PEER ASSISTED LEARNING STRATEGY WITH FLASHCARDS IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION OF THE SEVENTH GRADERS IN SMPN 13 MAGELANG

Reading has a fundamental role in learning English. Reading comprehension is an important part of this skill, where students obtain meaning from the text. Teachers can use various strategies to help students develop reading comprehension, including the Peer Assisted Learning Strategy. Teachers can also use relevant media, including Flashcards. This study is conducted to find outwhether there is a significant difference in reading comprehension between students who are taught using the Peer Assisted Learning Strategy and those who are not and to find out how effective the Peer Assisted Learning strategy is in teaching reading comprehension in junior high school.
The method of this study is quasi-experimental study used a non-equivalent design. The population of this study consisted of 210 seventh grade students of SMPN 13 Magelang in the academic year 2024/2025 divided into seven classes. The sample consisted of two classes, namely classes 7B and 7D, as the experimental and control classes. This study used reading tests and teaching administration documents as instruments.
The results showed that the experimental class using the Peer Assisted Learning Strategy with Flashcards had a mean score of 82.09, while the control group's mean score was 72.91. Independent sample t-test with Sig value showed a significant difference between the two groups. Value (2-tailed) of 0.001, which is less than the significance level of 0.05 (0.001 < 0.05). Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. The results of the calculation of the Normalized Gain Test obtained the average of the experimental class of 56.35, which means it is quite effective, and the control class of 15.49, which means it isnot effective.
The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, Peer Assisted Learning Strategy enables students to participate actively by learn with pair. Second, developments their reading comprehension. Third, the interaction between tutors and tutees also helps students become more active in class and increases students' confidence to express their opinions. Forth, motivation in learning English and developing in student’s vocabulary. Peer Assisted Learning can be considered an alternative for Educators to teach English, especially reading comprehension.
