SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF RECIPROCAL TEACHING STRATEGY USING READWORKS TO IMPROVE THE EXPOSITION READING SKILLS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Keywords: Reciprocal Teaching, ReadWorks, Give One Get One, Reading Skill.
The ability to understand reading texts, especially exposition texts, is still a challenge for many students at the secondary school level. One of the reasons is the learning strategies that are less varied and do not involve students actively. Therefore, there is a need for strategies that can increase students' involvement while sharpening their understanding of the text. This study aims to determine the difference in students' reading ability between those taught using the Reciprocal Teaching strategy combined with ReadWorks media and those taught using the Give One, Get One strategy with the same media. This study also evaluates the effectiveness of the Reciprocal Teaching strategy in improving students' reading skills. The study used a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample consisted of two Phase F1 classes at SMA Negeri 1 Salaman, which were determined through a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were multiple-choice tests (pre-test and post-test). The normality test results showed that the data were not normally distributed, so the hypothesis analysis was carried out using the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The Mann-Whitney test results showed that there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group (sig. 0.405 > 0.05), so the null hypothesis was accepted. This may be due to the short duration of the treatment, the use of ReadWorks media in both groups, as well as the strength of the learning strategies that are both collaborative-based. Reciprocal Teaching for the experimental group and Give One, Get One in the control group were both effective in increasing student engagement, so the difference in results did not appear significantly. However, the Wilcoxon test results showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test in the experimental group (sig. < 0.001), indicating that the Reciprocal Teaching strategy effectively improved students' reading skills. The effectiveness can be seen from the increase in student understanding through the stages of strategies such as predicting, clarifying, asking questions, and summarizing. These activities encourage students to think critically and actively in understanding the content of the reading. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to apply Reciprocal Teaching with ReadWorks to enhance students' reading comprehension, while students are expected to actively participate in group discussions and develop independent reading skills through ReadWorks.
