SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DE BONO’S SIX THINKING HATS STRATEGY TO IMPROVE ELEVENTH GRADERS’ WRITING SKILL OF HORTATORY EXPOSITION TEXT
Keywords: De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats Strategy, Hortatory Exposition Text, Writing Skill
This study was based on eleventh graders' low skill in writing hortatory exposition texts, which was caused by students' difficulties during the brainstorming process, lack of grammar and vocabulary knowledge, low motivation in learning to write, and the need to update the learning strategy. Therefore, De Bono's Six Thinking Hats would be used since it encourages students to think from multiple perspectives in an orderly manner. The objective of this study was whether there is a significant difference between the students' hortatory exposition text writing skill who are taught using the Six Thinking Hats strategy and the Small Group Discussion strategy. This study also aimed to determine how high the significant difference is. This quantitative research was conducted using a quasi-experimental research design with a nonequivalent control group design. This study involved two eleventh-grade classes at SMAN 2 Magelang, each as an experimental and a control group. Experimental group consisted of 23 students, and control group consisted of 16 students. The instrument used was a hortatory exposition text writing test in the form of a pretest and post-test, and the test results would be analysed through a normality test, a homogeneity test, an Independent Sample t-test, and an N-gain test. From the first research question, it was found that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected since the Independent Sample ttest results showed a Sig (2-tailed) value below 0.05. Furthermore, the N-gain test results showed that the average score obtained in the experimental group was 0.48, which was included in the medium category, while in the control group it was 0.21, which was included in the low category. The findings indicated that the Six Thinking Hats strategy effectively improved students' hortatory exposition text writing skill. The researcher suggests that English teachers consider using this strategy as an alternative in writing learning, encourages students to apply it, and urges further research with different samples, education levels, and text genres.
