SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SCATTERGORIES GAME TO TEACH WRITING IN TENTH GRADE OF SMA N 1 BANDONGAN IN MERDEKA CURRICULUM
Keywords: Scattergories game, Writing, Merdeka Curriculum.
Writing ability is a crucial language skill for students to have for academic purposes. Students at SMA N 1 Bandongan struggle with a variety of writingrelated issues, such as a lack of vocabulary, difficulty coming up with ideas and creating context, poor word choice, and trouble creating texts that are cohesive and coherent. Furthermore, the writing process is severely hindered by problems like low grammatical usage, a lack of enthusiasm, low motivation, and misconceptions about learning English as a foreign language. To overcome these problems, the purpose of this study is to find out how effectively the Scattergories game works as a teaching tool to improve students's writing of descriptive text. The game was chosen because it encourages students to think critically and come up with ideas in an interactive and fun context, which fosters creativity and engagement. It was believed that this strategy would improve writing performance overall, as well as language usage and concept development. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, measuring the treatment's effect using both a pre-test and a post-test. Participants in the study included 66 students in the tenth grade from SMA N 1 Bandongan, who were chosen from classes E9 and E2. They were divided into two groups: E9 was given instruction using the Scattergories game, while E2 was given instruction using Bamboozle. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22. The results of the independent sample t-test revealed a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.023, which was lower than the alpha level of 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. The t-count value of 2.326 was greater than the t-table value of 2.000, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the Scattergories game in improving students' writing abilities. In summary, students were able to overcome their typical writing challenges when the Scattergories game was utilized to teach descriptive writing. It enhanced grammatical accuracy, vocabulary, and idea generation while boosting student engagement and motivation. This technique is recommended for teachers seeking creative and student-centered methods to teach writing, as it aligns with the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum.
